Weight Loss Service - FAQs

What treatments are available through the service?

We currently offer Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) and Wegovy® (semaglutide).
Both medications are once-weekly injectable weight-management treatments used alongside a healthy diet and increased physical activity.

Do I need a prescription?

No. Our MediCare pharmacists can supply treatment under an approved Patient Group Direction (PGD).
You will complete an online health assessment and a consultation with a trained pharmacist to ensure the treatment is safe and clinically appropriate.

Who is eligible for the service?

Eligibility is assessed during your consultation. As a general guide, PGD criteria typically include:

• Aged 18–75 years
• BMI ≥30, or BMI ≥27 with a weight-related health condition (such as hypertension, pre-diabetes, or sleep apnoea)

You may not be eligible if you:

• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Have a history of pancreatitis or severe gastrointestinal disease
• Have certain thyroid condition

Can I switch provider? 

Yes. If you have been receiving treatment elsewhere, you can transfer to our service.
To do so, please provide:

• Evidence of your starting BMI, and
• Documentation showing your last supplied dose and treatment history (for example, a consultation summary or receipt from your previous provider)

This ensures safe continuation under the PGD.

How much does it cost? 

How long do appointments last?

• Initial consultation: Approximately 30 minutes
• Follow-up appointments: Around 15 minutes
  Appointments may be held in person or remotely, depending on your chosen pharmacy and service availability.

How much weight can I lose?

Weight loss varies from person to person, but clinical trials have shown:

• Mounjaro®: Average weight loss of up to 20% of starting body weight over 17 months
• Wegovy®: Average weight loss of 15–17% after 12 months

Your results will depend on treatment adherence, lifestyle changes, and individual response.

Can I switch from Mounjaro® to Wegovy®?

Yes. A switch may be possible, but it must be done safely.
There should be at least a 4-week gap after stopping Mounjaro® before starting Wegovy®.
Because doses do not convert directly, Wegovy® must be restarted at its lowest dose and gradually increased.
Your pharmacist will assess whether switching is clinically appropriate.

I am from the Republic of Ireland can I join your service?

Yes. ROI customers are welcome to join the service.

Please note you will need to attend your local MediCare pharmacy for a face-to-face appointment and medication cannot be posted.

I’m worried about side effects. Can you help?

Absolutely. Common side effects of Mounjaro® and Wegovy® include nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, and reduced appetite.
Your MediCare pharmacist is trained to provide advice on managing these effects, and we have developed a 24/7 online support plan with:

• Tips to minimise GI symptoms
• Dietary guidance
• Hydration and meal-planning advice
