Weight Loss Service - Customer Support - Side Effect Management

Starting Mounjaro or Wegovy can bring excellent benefits for weight loss and health improvement, but it may also cause some side effects, especially during the early stages of treatment. Most side effects are mild and temporary, but knowing how to manage them can make a big difference to your comfort and success on the programme. Below, you’ll find practical tips and strategies to help minimise common issues such as nausea, constipation, and fatigue, so you can stay on track with your weight loss journey.

  1. Nausea

Most common early side effect due to delayed gastric emptying.

Management:

  • Eat smaller meals, more frequently (5–6 light meals vs. 2–3 large ones).
  • Avoid high-fat, greasy, or fried foods — these increase gastric workload.
  • Eat bland, dry foods (e.g., crackers, toast) and avoid lying down after meals
  • Stay hydrated, but sip fluids slowly.

2. Vomiting

Less common than nausea.

Management:

  • Eat smaller meals, more frequently (5–6 light meals vs. 2–3 large ones).
  • Avoid high-fat, greasy, or fried foods — these increase gastric workload

3. Constipation

Due to slowed speed of your digestion and possibly decreased food intake.

Management:

  • Increase fibre intake: fruits with skin, vegetables, whole grains, flaxseeds.
  • Ensure adequate water intake (aim for 2–3 L/day).
  • Regular physical activity can stimulate digestion.
  • Laxatives may be used short-term.

4. Diarrhoea

Can occur in some patients (less common than constipation).

Management:

  • Eat low-fat, low-fibre, bland foods.
  • Hydrate with electrolyte-rich fluids (e.g., broth, ORS).
  • Avoid dairy temporarily if sensitive.
  • Rule out food triggers or infections if prolonged.

5. Fatigue / Low Energy

May be secondary to reduced intake.

Management:

  • Balanced meals, not just low-calorie ones.
  • Speak to your doctor and consider monitoring your iron/B12/glucose levels if persistent.

6. Injection Site Reactions

Redness, itching, or discomfort at the injection site.

Management:

  • Rotate injection sites (abdomen, thigh, upper arm).
  • Use alcohol swab before and apply light pressure after.
