In the UK it is estimated that 1 in every 4 adults are living with obesity1.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used method to check if your body weight is healthy. To check your own BMI use the calculator found HERE all you need is your body weight in kilograms and height in metres.

What are the Risks of Obesity?

Obesity is a serious health concern and increases the risk of many health conditions including:

·         Type 2 diabetes

·         High blood pressure

·         Coronary heart disease

·         Types of cancer

·         Strokes

 

What Causes Obesity?

Obesity is caused by many factors including genetic, but in its simplest form it is caused by an imbalance of energy intake from the food we eat and energy expenditure from physical activity.

 

How do you Treat Obesity?

The best way to treat obesity is to eat a healthy reduced calorie diet and regular exercise. To do this you can:

ü  Eat a balanced calorie-controlled diet – our pharmacists can help you with this!

ü  Do at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week e.g. walking or swimming.

How does the MediCare Weight Loss Service Work?

You can book an appointment with one of our trained weight management pharmacists at a time and location that suits you.

During your consultation:

  • We’ll measure your height, weight, and if appropriate, waist circumference and blood pressure.
  • You’ll be asked about your medical history, lifestyle, and goals.
  • Our pharmacist will use this information to create a tailored weight management plan for you.

All consultations take place face-to-face in a private room at your chosen MediCare Pharmacy.

 

Who is Suitable for the Service?

Those individuals who are defined as obese (BMI 30 kg/m2) or those individuals who are defined as overweight (BMI 27 kg/m2) with another weight related condition for example high blood pressure.
